According to the World Bank “adjustment and economic degradation is felt more severely by urban populations, particularly the poor”. Though basically a rural area, there are numerous small centers of population concentration, which became the administrative headquarters of local and state governments. Established during the colonial and post-colonial era, these population centers have been growing. Among the major ones are Jos, Makurdi, Lafia, Gboko, Otukpo, Wukari, Jalingo. Lokoja, etc. Usually, problems associated with urban growth have come to afflict these growing centers. Hence, MARTINA CENTRE does investigate and promote intervention strategies in such issues as:
i. Women empowerment
ii. Urbanization in Central Nigeria
iii. Living space and living conditions
iv. Urban sanitations and Health (especially the recurrent problem of communicable
diseases in poor and high-density areas)
v. Unemployment, skills development and employment possibilities in urban centers.
vi. Neighborhood community organization and urban renewal strategies.
